A few years ago, a brand I know very well strolled into BFCM weekend with a Meta account they had no idea was broken.

So, on the biggest sales day(s) of the year, when they went to scale Meta spend, the account wouldn’t let them. Because of a spend cap nobody caught in time. A spend cap that actually wasn’t catchable (was an invisible control not visible in the ad account, needed rep override).

The exact hours they needed to scale most, the money was just stuck there, unspent, because the account couldn’t take the heat. And sadly, Cyber doesn’t do Mulligans. That 1 tiny mistake tanked their results for the whole year.

Not to freak you out or anything.

Today, you & I are going to talk about how to prevent the preventable. Because this often starts a layer BELOW the ads themselves…inside the data and infrastructure feeding them.

Read on for how to diagnose if there’s a leak, and how to fix it so your ads absolutely rip this year. If you fix Meta, you fix your life. Or, however the expression goes.

(There’s also some white glove treatment at the end, but I’m getting ahead of myself.)

IS YOUR META ACCOUNT OKAY? REALLY?

It’s September. Labor Day is in your rearview. The 2 biggest revenue days of the year are close enough to touch.

And from what I’m hearing, Meta’s been mean lately. Performance is a bit…soft.

Even the big brands are a little bit in their feelings right now, and the 1s saying they aren’t, are lying. My performance has held up this year. Actually let me not jinx it. Knock on wood. Throw salt. Don’t look at it.

And to put a real flashlight under my chin, Black Friday & Cyber Monday both land in November this year. No December Cyber to bail us out.

Okay, sorry, taking a breath.

If you’re spiraling over your Meta ads, I’m here to tell you…the ads themselves are usually innocent. Fix the data underneath, you can pull around 20% more out of the same Meta spend, with the same creative.

Let’s talk about how to get those dollars back.

FIRST: BE THE EARLY BIRD; HOARD YOUR WORMS

Every September, I turn into a crow on a pile of shiny things. (Birders, don’t fact check me.) Except that my shiny things = every lever I might conceivably need to yank come November. 🎰

It’s also doing all the things I can do in advance. Pre-approving spend with finance, paying off every credit card, lining up offers I might not even run. Preparation I hope I won’t need.

I do this so that when something moves at 10AM on Cyber Monday, I’m moving at 10:01. Calm, but ready to roar, you know?

The most important part of my prep is making sure my data is CLEAN and also FLOWING WHERE IT NEEDS TO FLOW.

Non-negotiable, because your standard pixel loses 20-25% of your conversions. To ad blockers, browser rules, iOS opt-outs, cookie chaos, etc.

That means the data you’re feeding to Meta could be 20-25% off-target, right now, this second.

Math was never my subject, but I know that’s a pretty ****ing big leak. And when you hit BFCM, what’s a slow drip right now becomes a burst pipe. 🚰💣

Me when my data’s not adding up

THE LEVER I NEVER PUT DOWN

For this reason, the shiny thing I’m never putting down is Elevar. 💎You already know how I feel about it, so I’ll keep the recap short:

What Elevar does in the background: runs server-side, catches what the pixel drops, and feeds your platforms cleaner, richer signals.

What you feel: a ~20% lift in Meta performance, and the blessed day your GA4 and Shopify numbers finally match.

Powerful, but so simple it’s kind of stupid, as in “it’s so simple that it’s stupid NOT to run this.”

This cleaned-up data also flows into Klaviyo, which as your resident retention freak, matters a LOT to me. Without this data, when a shopper comes back after their cookie has expired, your system might see a stranger, and fail to trigger an abandonment email. But Elevar remembers that shopper for up to a YEAR, so Klaviyo fires correctly. Which delivers 2-3x the revenue off the same flows. As far as I’m concerned, rent has been PAID.

DIAGNOSING YOUR DATA PLUMBING PROBLEMS

The ecom Cosmo quiz nobody wants to take: is your pixel about to embarrass you? Is your data cheating on you behind your back?? Count the red flags.

🚩: Your Shopify, GA4, and Meta numbers disagree, and you’ve made your peace with it.

🚩: “Direct / none” is eating a big fat slice of your traffic in GA4

🚩: Your email & SMS flows pull in less than they should, but you’re not sure why.

🚩: Meta performance dropped last week, and you can’t tell if it’s the market, the creative, the account, or the cruel ecom gods out to get you.

If you counted more than 1, I fear your data is leaking. Less scary is the fact that this is a pixel problem, and it’s incredibly FIXABLE.

GO GET YOUR LEVER

Now it’s time for me to play plumber and tell you: there is still time to fix your pixel & shore up your Meta performance before the 2 biggest days of your year.

Not much time. But some. And the sooner the better, because the sooner your account starts training on better data, the smarter it will be by the time November rolls around.

To help, I begged requested Elevar give you the white-glove treatment on any install, so you save time & money (it’s typically $1k). So, they’ll handle setting up your data layer, server-side destination, client-side tracking, GA4 configuration, QA, AND consent management. Free for any install before November 6th.

All this gets you set up before BFCM, so you’re nowhere near the code in November, when you have way too many other things to think about.

Add this to your shiny pile, my murder of crows, and start making more from Meta.

I believe in you. And I want you to believe in your pixel. This is where to start.
